PRS for Music is partnering with Classic Album Sundays for a specially curated Instagram Live to celebrate International Women’s Day 2022 that tells the stories of women in the audio and production world, to encourage the next generation of female talent to enter this space.

Hosted by Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy, broadcaster/DJ/producer and founder of Classic Album Sundays, the event will take place on Instagram Live on Tuesday 8 March at 3pm, and is aimed at women and underrepresented genders, and open to all allies.

Viewers will be able to hear from producer, Sophie Ackroyd, former resident of Spotify’s Secret Genius Studio, where she engineered for Future Cut, Benjamin Francis Leftwich, Nina Nesbitt, Plested and Trakgirl.

Gnarly will share her experiences on her recent collaboration with poet and writer Nikita Gill and her role as the lead mix and mastering engineer for the UK Beatbox Championships.

Michelle Escoffery, Ivor Novello Award-winning songwriter and President of PRS Members’ Council, will also join the panel to share her experiences on coming up in a studio environment and studio life today.

New figures released last week show that despite increases in women entering the profession, gender balance within the professional songwriter and composer community remains heavily skewed towards men. Men still make up 81.2% of PRS for Music’s songwriter and composer/producer membership.

In 2021, PRS for Music, the organisation which represents the rights of over 160,000 songwriters, composers, and music publishers worldwide, recorded 2,090 women registering as professional songwriters and composers. This is the first time this figure has exceeded more than 2,000.

The Music Producers Guild (MPG), which represents professional record producers, recording engineers, mixers and mastering engineers, has also reported a steady increase in female members joining the organisation within the last three years, accelerating from just 6% in 2018, to 13% in 2021.

Michelle Escoffery, President of the PRS Members’ Council, said: “International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the achievements of women. It also highlights the need for gender parity and equity. PRS for Music is proud to partner with Classic Album Sundays for a discussion that we hope will help prompt conversation and elevate songwriters, composers and producers within our industry.”

Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy, said: “Recently a spotlight has shone on women in under-represented areas of music such as DJ-ing, but there is still much more work to be done, especially in the area of audio production. It is estimated that only 5% of the producers in the UK are women. This series aims to rectify that through celebrating our existing female producers and inspiring the next generation.”

The MPG (Music Producers Guild) has revealed its latest director election results, as well as the shortlist for its 2021 awards.

Mastering engineer and AMI columnist Katie Tavini and producer Matt Taylor were added to the MPG board of directors, with existing directors Olga Fitzroy and Rhiannon Mair re-elected.

Fitzroy commented: “Being re-elected to a board that is now 60% female in a part of the industry where women are often under-represented is a significant step for the MPG and I’m proud to be a part of it. I look forward to continuing to support our members through the covid -crisis and championing their diverse talents as the industry begins its recovery.

Mair said; “I am really pleased to be re-appointed a director of the MPG. I feel proud to be a part of an organisation that campaigns tirelessly to ensure the role of producers and engineers are valued within our industry. I also acknowledge the important work that still needs to be done to ensure all ethnicities backgrounds, gender and LGBTQ+ creatives are welcomed, seen, heard and celebrated.”

The 2021 MPG Awards shortlist has also been revealed, with the 13th annual edition of the event due to take place in London on June 10.

Tony Platt, managing director of the MPG Awards, commented: “In spite of the current situation we were delighted to find an increased engagement with both the submissions process and the voting resulting in a very varied shortlist. Music has been a lifeline for many during the dark days of lockdown and the resilience of our music makers finding innovative ways to keep music alive deserves to be recognised across the board. We are looking forward to a fabulous event in June when we will hopefully be celebrating the start of a return to some kind of normality. Keep safe.”

The Music Producers Guild has announced the appointment of Olga FitzRoy and Rhiannon Mair to its Executive Board.

Both women were elected by MPG Full Members at an Extraordinary General Meeting, which took place in London on April 2, 2019.

Olga FitzRoy has been an assistant director of the MPG for the last two years and has represented the Guild at the UK Music board. As the founder of the Parental Pay Equality campaign, she has worked tirelessly to turn an idea for shared parental leave for freelancers into a bill being debated in Parliament.

Commenting on her appointment, she said: “I can’t wait to get started in my new role. I will work tirelessly for our existing members, but also make sure our membership grows to truly reflect our amazingly diverse music industry by reaching out to producers and engineers from BAME backgrounds and working in genres not yet well represented in our membership. I also want to work to make sure our employment practises are inclusive and eradicate unpaid internships that create unfair barriers to talent coming into our industry.”

Producer, songwriter and artist Rhiannon Mair is ideally placed to represent self-producing artists, whose numbers are growing within the MPG’s membership. As a Full Member of the MPG, she has been actively involved in representing the Guild at social and industry events around the UK.

“I am thrilled to be joining the executive board of directors,” said Rhiannon. “I’m looking forward to contributing towards the growth of the Guild and bringing some new ideas to the table.”

Olga and Rhiannon join the existing members of the MPG’s Executive Board, Cameron Craig, Dan Cox and Bruno Ellingham.

The Executive Board would like to extend its thanks to producers Mick Glossop and Andrew Hunt who stood down as Board members at the EGM after many years’ service to the Guild.

The Music Producers Guild has revealed that recording artist, writer, producer, Mercury Prize winner and BRIT Award nominee Skepta will be the recipient of the 2019 Inspiration Award.

The prestigious award, sponsored by Audio Note, is given to a recording professional who, in the opinion of the MPG Awards board of directors, is responsible for a body of work that has significantly inspired others. Previous recipients have included Imogen Heap, Nile Rodgers, Roni Size, Damon Albarn, Glyn Johns and Sylvia Massy.

Since emerging as a producer and MC back in 2004, Skepta has become one of the most important British artists working in music today. Skepta’s music has been predominantly associated with the grime scene but he has built up a broad, and diverse fan-base with his influence felt across contemporary culture on a global scale.

Bruno Ellingham, executive director of the MPG, said: “Skepta has been at the forefront of the grime scene for some time, his influence now crosses genres and is felt not only in music but in the art and fashion worlds too. The Music Producers Guild opened submissions for its 2019 Awards on 3 September and is calling on all recording professionals, their management companies and the public at large to get onboard and submit the names of people they think are worthy of one of these prestigious gongs.

Running until midnight on 15 September, this year’s window for submissions is shorter than in previous years and for this reason the MPG is encouraging people to act quickly so that they avoid disappointment.

With a roll call of previous award winners that includes Sir George Martin CBE, Youth, Paul Epworth, FKA Twigs, Brian Eno, Roni Size, Catherine Marks, Trevor Horn and Dave Stewart, the MPG Awards are widely regarded as a key event in the UK music industry calendar. Their aim is to recognise and reward the best and brightest talent in music recording, along with the industry’s rising stars.

Submissions are the first stage in the MPG’s robust Awards process. Anyone can submit a name to 13 of the Award categories (the remaining Awards are in the gift of the MPG). Once names are submitted and checked as eligible against each Award criteria, MPG Full Members vote to create a shortlist, which is presented to the judging panel in December. Eligible recording professionals who want to be part of the entire process but are not yet MPG members can join MPG by following this link

Existing members who wish to upgrade to Full Member status should log into the MPG site and go to MY ACCOUNT/MEMBERSHIP DETAILS in the menu bar.

“The MPG has worked tirelessly to raise the status of the UK’s highly skilled recording professionals and our Awards, which over 10 years have built up an integrity respected throughout the production community, are hugely important in championing their creativity and talent,” said Tony Platt, managing director of MPG Awards.

“Submissions have increased every year, as have the number of musical genres represented, but there is always room for more. The MPG would like to encourage as many people as possible to take part – both in the submissions process and as voting Full Members – so that we have a truly diverse range of recording professionals in with a chance of winning.”

LIPA graduate Sam Baker has been named as the recipient of the 2018 Music Producers Guild Prize, which brings with it a host of benefits including financial support from PPL.

Now in its eighth year, the Music Producers Guild Prize rewards the most promising student to graduate from The Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA) Sound Technology degree programme.

Jon Thornton, who heads LIPA’s BA (Hons) Sound Technology programme, said: "Sam’s technical skills and ability are what we’d expect from any student leaving the programme. But what made him stand out in his final year was his ability to marry these skills so proficiently to the ‘human’ side of being a producer. He has a natural flair for, and understanding of, what makes both music and people work well. The opportunities that the MPG LIPA Prize will afford him can take this talent and develop into something really special.”

Originally from Cardiff, Sam Baker joined LIPA straight from school. “I played in bands from an early age and soon developed an interest in sound engineering and recording,” he explained. “The LIPA course was exactly what I wanted to do, and I was really thrilled when I was accepted onto it.”

During his time at LIPA, Baker produced local bands and undertook work experience at Trevor Horn’s SARM Studios in London. This eventually led to the offer of a permanent job as assistant engineer, which Baker took up after completing his course. He is now finding his feet in London and thoroughly enjoying his new role.

Baker was presented with his prize by MPG representatives and LIPA Companions Tony Platt and Steve Levine during LIPA’s annual graduation ceremony, which took place last Friday (July 27).

"We are delighted, once again, to join with MPG Award winners and many of our Awards sponsors to support an exceptional graduate from the LIPA Sound Technology course,” said Tony Platt. “Our reward is seeing them flourish as they chart their career path and contribute to the amazing pool of talent making music in the UK and beyond.”

The many benefits conferred on Baker by the MPG Prize include the opportunity to work alongside top recording professionals such as producer Steve Levine, producer Jolyon Thomas, mix engineer Spike Stent, recording engineers Marta Salogni and Manon Grandjean, orchestral recording engineer Haydn Bendall and mastering engineer Matt Colton. He will also have the chance to intern at Abbey Road Studios and will be mentored by various MPG members and by Jane Third, winner of the MPG A&R Award 2018.

To enable him to take up these opportunities, Baker will receive up to £500 from PPL to cover travel and accommodation costs. He will also visit the headquarters of AMS Neve and Avid to meet their product specialists, learn about console design and have in-depth tuition on Avid’s flagship controller, the Pro Tools S6. In addition, AMS Neve is adding to Baker’s equipment collection by donating a 1073N Mic Preamp and EQ.

“I am really delighted to have won this prize and I can’t wait to take up these wonderful opportunities,” Baker said. “I’m also looking forward to becoming a member of MPG and getting tickets to next year’s MPG Awards. I’m good friends with Loïc Gaillard who won the Prize last year and he’s already told me how much fun I’m going to have. Combined with a new job and a move to London, it is going to be such an exciting year!”

The tenth edition of the MPG Awards took place at Grosvenor House on London’s Park Lane last night, with five of the top awards going to women in what will be seen as a major turning point in the event’s history and a triumph for the ongoing struggle for gender equality in the music industry.

The event saw Producer Catherine Marks (pictured, above) carry off the top accolade of UK Producer Of The Year. Marks, who previously won the MPG’s Breakthrough Producer Of The Year Award in 2016, was nominated this year for her work on The Amazons’ self-titled album, Manchester Orchestra’s album A Black Mile To The Surface and The Big Moon’s Love In The 4 Dimension.

The MPG Awards 2018 also honoured producer and musician Imogen Heap with the Inspiration Award.

The other big winners of the night Manon Grandjean, who carried off the Recording Engineer Of The Year Award presented by grime superstar Stormzy.

Marta Salogni won Breakthrough Engineer Of The Year and Jane Third won the A&R Award. The artists they have collectively worked include Stormzy, London Grammar, The xx, Kasabian, Feist, Goldfrapp, Frank Ocean and Slaves.

The MPG Awards 2018 also saw Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley honoured with the (PPL-sponsored) Award for Outstanding Contribution to UK Music, recognising one of the most influential partnerships in music production over the last 40 years.

Developing a sound described as “That English Pop Thing”, Langer and Winstanley have a credit list that reads like a pop hall of fame and includes many classic albums, not least Elvis Costello’s Punch The Clock, Dexys Midnight Runners’ Too-Rye-Ay and Bush’s best-selling album Sixteen Stone and numerous Madness albums.

Tony Platt, MPG Awards managing director, said: "We are delighted to be celebrating 10 years of MPG Awards and it is especially encouraging to see the emergence of so much fresh new talent alongside the success of earlier breakthrough winners and the deserved recognition for more established talent. I think we have every right to be proud of the milestone this represents – long may it continue!"
