The pro sound and music industry has been paying tribute to audio pioneer Rupert Neve, who has died at the age of 94.

One of the most influential figures in pro audio history, Neve’s name was synonymous with high-end audio quality and innovation. The large format analogue consoles bearing his name have long been a hallmark of premium sound, taking pride of place in many of the world’s most revered studios.

His death on February 12, due to non-COVID-19 related pneumonia and heart failure, was announced on February 13 via a statement on the Rupert Neve website. He died in Wimberley, Texas where he had resided for the past 27 years.

“I’ve known and worked with Rupert for nearly 30 years,” said Josh Thomas, Rupert Neve Designs’ co-founder and general manager. “When Rupert, his wife Evelyn, and I sat at his kitchen table and founded Rupert Neve Designs 16 years ago, he had two goals. The first was to set a new standard in the quality of recorded sound, drawing upon his unparalleled depth of experience to create high-end solutions for the modern recording engineer, musician, and listener alike. The second was to pass on his philosophies, techniques, and methodologies to a new generation of designers to carry his life’s work and passion into the future.

“It was always assumed that the company would outlive him on this earth, and for 16 years he poured his energies into creating a team that would become the caretakers of the theories, practices, and ideologies that truly constitute a Rupert Neve design. All of us at the company are exceedingly grateful for the years of careful instruction and mentoring with which he has blessed us, and we will continue to preserve his legacy in everything we do moving forward. The world certainly sounds better because he was here.”

Artists, producers and studios from across the world have been paying tribute to the late audio innovator, with many taking to social media to honour his indelible influence.

Pro audio icon Rupert Neve has died at the age of 94 due to non-COVID-19 related pneumonia and heart failure.

All of us at the company are exceedingly grateful for the years of careful instruction and mentoring with which he has blessed us, and we will continue to preserve his legacy in everything we do moving forward. The world certainly sounds better because he was here.”

Neve’s vast contribution contribution to the pro audio industry saw him recognised with multiple accolades throughout his career. These include a Lifetime Achievement Technical GRAMMY Award in 1997, an Audio Engineering Society Fellowship Award in 2006, 16 TEC (Technical Excellence and Creativity) Awards for Rupert Neve Designs products, and Studio Sound magazine’s Audio Person of the Century Award, in 1999.

Neve and his wife Evelyn established Neve Electronics in 1961. Over the course of the next 10 years, the company would produce iconic pieces of equipment such as the Neve 80 and 50 series mixing desks.

He adopted digital technology in 1977, when he introduced the world’s first moving fader system, NECAM (NEve Computer Assisted Mixdown), installing the first system at legendary Beatles producer George Martin’s Air Studios in London. The Neve 81 series of mixing desks integrated digital assignable controls into an otherwise analog design.

Neve Companies was sold off in 1975, eventually being purchased by AMS in England.

In 2011, Yamaha released the first Rupert Neve Designs plugins, approved by Neve, for its Steinberg platform. The plugins have been integrated into Yamaha’s CL Series and Rivage PM10 digital consoles for live sound production, another first for Rupert.

Rupert is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Evelyn; five children, Mary, David, John, Stephen, and Ann; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Arrangements for a celebration of his life for family and friends will be made when it is safe to do so.

The music world has been paying tribute to Grammy-nominated producer and artist Sophie, who died falling a “sudden accident” at the age of 34 on Saturday, January 30.

An artist in her own right, as well as a producer with a client list comprising the likes of Charli XCX, Madonna, Camila Cabello, Diplo and others, Sophie was one of the most revered and sought-after talents in the industry, incorporating an experimental approach to production that blended elements of pop, dance and trance to truly unique effect.

The Glasgow-born producer was also a transgender icon, telling Billboard that being trans meant “taking control to bring your body more in line with your soul and spirit so the two aren’t fighting against each other and struggling to survive”,

Sophie’s management said in a statement that the star had died at around 4am in Athens, Greece on Saturday, January 30, adding: “Sophie was a pioneer of a new sound, one of the most influential artists in the last decade”.

A statement from Sohpie’s record label, Transgressive, revealed more details of the accident: “True to her spirituality she had climbed up to watch the full moon and slipped and fell. She will always be here with us.

“The family thank everyone for their love and support and request privacy at this devastating time.”

Fellow artists and producers from across the music industry have also been paying their respects to the star over the weekend, highlighting her pioneering spirit and innovative approach to music.

Jack Sherman, second guitarist for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, has died at the age of 64, the band have confirmed via social media. No cause of death has been disclosed.

The guitarist replaced Hillel Slovak, founding member of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, in 1983, but his relationship with the group was tempestuous. He was not included when the Peppers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

“We of the RHCP family would like to wish Jack Sherman smooth sailing into the worlds beyond, for he has passed. Jack played on our debut album as well as our first tour of the USA. He was a unique dude and we thank him for all times good, bad and in between,” the band’s Instagram statement read.

Legendary rock producer Martin Birch, known for his nine album, eleven year stint with Iron Maiden, as well as his work producing Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Blue Öyster Cult, and Rainbow has died, aged 71.

Geezer Butler tweeted: “Really sad to hear of the passing of Martin Birch. Brilliant producer. Had the pleasure of working with him on the Black Sabbath albums Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules. Condolences to Vera and family.”

“It is with a very heavy heart I’ve just had verified my very dear friend and producer Martin Birch has passed away,” offered David Coverdale. Birch produced the first six Whitesnake albums.

Surrey-born Birch began his music career in the late sixties, working as an engineer on albums for Jeff Beck and Fleetwood Mac. He quickly developed a knack for capturing the raw excitement of loud, raucous rock bands in a studio.

His style, which placed guitars to the fore, was instrumental in defining the sound of heavy and hard rock. He played a key role during the NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) which surged in the late Seventies.  During his tenure with Iron Maiden he served as producer and engineer on classic releases such as Killers, Number of The Beast, Piece Of Mind and Somewhere In Time

He also produced Whitesnake’s ‘Here I go again’, featured on the album Saints & Sinners, in 1982. The song would be rerecorded in 1987, and go on to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Birch retired in 1992.
A cause of death has not been announced. AMI extends its condolences to Martin’s family and friends.
