Summer NAMM 2021 preview: What to expect at this year’s event

This year’s Summer NAMM sees a return to a live show after last year’s event was cancelled due to the pandemic and 2021’s Winter NAMM became the virtual ‘Believe in Music’ week. NAMM suggested that 93,000 virtual visitors attended the previous show.

NAMM has worked closely with the City of Nashville and local authorities to devise a plan that will enable the this summer’s show to go ahead.

Here’s what to expect at Summer NAMM 2021…

Summer NAMM 2021: Keynote speakers

NAMM President and CEO Joe Lamond will host a kickoff session to explore the state of the industry after a challenging year and a half.

Also among the event’s sessions at Summer NAMM 2021 is Public Enemy’s Brian Hardgroove speaking on cross-cultural issues in the music industry. Another highlight is The Record Shop studio owner Sean Giovanni talking about how studios can thrive through disruption.

Nashville pro audio icon and BlackBird Studio founder John McBride will be interviewed on post-Covid protocols for live sound while music tech expert Craig Anderton will speak on the five technologies that are set to revolutionise the music industry. 

Also on the lineup is a panel discussion on the future of livestreaming featuring StageIt CEO Stephen White and Fireplay CEO Nick Whitehouse. 

The NAMM Young Professionals (YP) keynote will feature a discussion with Sabian President Andy Zildjian, who will speak on leadership, career development and the role of mentorship in the music industry.

Summer NAMM 2021: Performances

Performances announced so far include live appearances from guitarists David Wolak, Ray Cummings, Zach Seabaugh and Nashville duo Southerland at the Fred Kelly Picks booth (#1603).

The Magslide booth (#1622) will feature demos from Jimmy Dormire, Richie Scholl, and Patrick Sweany along with slide guitar wizard Boscoe France, and ‘the Blues Doctor’ Stacy Mitchhart.

Summer NAMM 2021: Gear

IK Multimedia is teasing a launch for 15 July with the tagline “The finest tones ever finally break free”. Some have speculated that the announcement could see the brand’s AmpliTube guitar processor plugin integrated into a physical amp.

Studio monitor specialist Augspurger has already revealed its new 2-way near-field monitoring setup – the MX-65 MinimaX – which will make its debut at Summer NAMM 2021 on the Augspurger booth (#212).

Soul Asylum Studios Acoustics & Design Firm, part of the Atlanta-based Soul Asylum Studios Group, will showcase seven products, including its distinctive SA25M studio monitor on booth #112.

Other brands attending the show include everyone from Gibson, Gretsch and D’Addario to Augspurger Monitors and Alclair Audio.
