MPG Awards 2021: Metropolis’ Stuart Hawkes wins Mastering Engineer of the Year

Metropolis Studios’ Stuart Hawkes has been award Mastering Engineer of the Year in the Music Producers’ Guild Awards 2021. 

With no, in-person ceremony this year, the MPG Awards 2021 are being announced on Twitter.

With a 25-year career as a mastering engineer, Hawkes primarily uses analogue audio equipment and has worked with the likes of Amy Winehouse, Ed Sheeran, Stormzy and Jessie Ware. 

Hawkes’ work was highlighted at the BRIT Awards 2021 when J Hus picked up the Male Solo Artist award. His album, Big Conspiracy, was mastered by Hawkes.

He has also recently worked with Headie One, Disclosure, Clean Bandit and Laura Mvula.

‘I am thrilled to win the engineer of the year award and I’d like to thank the MPG for the honour,” said Hawkes. “I’d also like to thank all the artists, A&R teams, labels and managers I have worked with in this most difficult of years for all their support and brilliant music.’

Metropolis is also on the shortlist for Studio of the Year, alongside Liverpool’s Parr Street Studios and Rockfield in Monmouth, Wales. 

The winners of the MPG Awards 2021 are being announced gradually via Twitter, with two winners revealed per week since 14 June 2021. 

Winners announced so far include Shuta Shinoda as Breakthrough Engineer of the Year, and Hannah Peel, Michael Keeney and Kris Stronge for their work on the soundtrack for TV drama The Deceived with won Original UK Score Recording of the Year.

Prince’s former sound engineer Susan Rogers has also been revealed as the recipient of the the Outstanding Contribution To UK Music award.
